Negative taken for August 11, 1961, Arkansas Gazette article "A Visit to Historic Civil War Battle Site in Missouri," B1:2. Monument dedicated to Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon who died at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. The marker is located at the Springfield National Cemetery. It reads, "At or near this spot fell Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon born Ashford, Conn. 1818; graduated U.S. Military Academy 1841. Commander of the Federal Forces in the Battle of Wilson Creek August 10, 1861. This marker is erected by the University Club of General Lyon and the hundreds of brave men, north and south, who on this field, died for the right as God gave them to see the right. 1928."

Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861), soldier and author, was born in Ashford, Conn. A graduate of West Point, he served in the U.S. Army as lieutenant in Florida fighting Seminole Indians, at Sackets Harbor, N.Y., as captain in Mexico during the war (1845-1848), and in "Bleeding" Kansas. Lyon was also a well-known political commentator. He is best known for his leadership at the 1861 battle of Wilson's Creek, Mo., as a result of which was that Missouri remained in the Union during the Civil War. ...
